Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia About Kuala Lumpur

Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, KUALA LUMPUR, or KL as it's popularly known, is the youngest Southeast Asian capital and the most economically successful – and it's still growing: building sites abound and the city is awash with stunning examples of modern architecture, not least the famous Petronas Towers and the recently opened Museum of Islamic Arts. It's not one of Malaysia's most charming cities, perhaps: it doesn't have, for example, the narrow alleys, bicycles and mahjong games of Melaka or Kota Bharu or the atmospheric waterfront of Kuching. But it's safe and sociable, and with a population of nearly two million, it's usually exciting in the day and always buzzing with energy at night. From a cultural standpoint, it certainly has enough interesting monuments, galleries, markets and museums to keep visitors busy for at least a week.

It’s this multicultural character that makes KL such a fascinating place – one moment you could be burning joss sticks at a Chinese temple, the next shedding shoes to enter a mosque or Hindu shrine. Hedonists will also be happy: you can eat and shop like a king in KL and the nightlife is cranking. For all its activity and urban landscapes KL also has its tranquil moments. This is a city where you can chill out in lush parks or escape to the countryside in the surrounding state of Selangor.

How to get there

By Air:

By Rail:
From Singapore to KL: Taking the train is the safe, comfortable, cheap and traditional way to travel independently between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur & Penang.  It's environmentally-friendly, too, compared to unnecessary short haul flights.  Singapore-Kuala Lumpur takes 6 hours on one of two modern daytime trains or 8 hours on a time-effective overnight sleeper train including comfortable sleeping-berths with fresh clean sheets.
You leave from the faded colonial grandeur of Singapore's 1932 art deco mainline station, rumble slowly over the famous causeway and on into Malaysia, over a railway built by the British and mainly single-track, past palm plantations and jungle.  In Kuala Lumpur, trains now use the modern KL Sentral station, but those going north from KL still pass through the famous old Moorish-style station.
You can also travel from Bangkok to Penang or Kuala Lumpur by train. Firther infomation please call your travel agent, Tourism Malaysia office or visit Malayan Railway (KTMB) website.

From Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd operates both the KLIA Ekspres and the KLIA Transit lines, which connect the airport to the city centre, terminating at the KL City Air Terminal (KL CAT) in KL Sentral.

KLIA Ekspres
KLIA Ekspres is the fastest way to travel to the city, as the journey only takes 28 minutes non-stop.  The train is equipped with comfortable seats, digital entertainment, a wheelchair seat restraint, a wheelchair-friendly washroom, and luggage racks.
